Injection molding is one of the most important techniques for the formation of synthetic products. All kinds of toys, computer parts (mouse, keyboard, etc), kitchenware, car parts, freezer boxes, etc. are formed this way.
With injection molding, the synthetic that is supplied as granules, is melted into a compact mass. This mass is injected into a mold of which the hollow is the negative shape of the desired product. By cooling down, the synthetic solidifies, resulting into the desired product.
It takes a specialist to design the mold. The designer of a mold does not only have to reckon with the shape of the product, but also with the properties of the synthetic (to avoid shrinking and deformation), the qualities and the size of the injection molding machine and the demands of the production capacity (cycle time). The production of molds is therefore very expensive. But by producing a high quantity of pieces, the unit price is low. This makes the product economically interesting.
